Reflection for Dossier Review 10/4

Hi everyone,

First of all, I would like to say that this is my blog page which I created for R541 course in last Spring semester. My general blog will come soon.

This is my fourth dossier review experience and I am still exciting as much as my first experience. Also, when I imagine myself as a presenter, - which is going to be next Fall - my excitement will start increasing. I hope everything will be great for all presenter.

It is very nice to see various people who have different interests. Actually, it feel great because all of those different interest show us how huge our field is. I just noticed that the students who are studying scaffolding are creating their own scaffolding. I could have been good if Suhkyung used "my scaffolds" instead of "Integration". This is just my recommendation and I don't know if it is really correct or not to use this kind of title in our presentation.

I really realized that I have to be prepared  very well for my dossier #2 next year. I have to be sure that what I am interested in, why I am interested in, if I have multiple interests(I have), what are the relationships between them. Briefly, I have to have the ability to explain whatever I mentioned.

 

Presenting Project Process

Hi,

I would like to share how our team has been preparing for the project process before we present on next Monday. Our project plan was not started well because we changed our topic several weeks after we had started to our first topic. We could not access any first grade teachers to apply our thoughts about play-based learning in the context of transition from kindergarten to first grade. Than, we decided to change our project to public speaking and finally to academic public speaking. We are going to use some videos like lynda.com. For that, we are working on a website to integrate videos into it. I think we can complete our presentation on Sunday.

Collaboration vs. Cooperation

Hi,

This week, when I looked at the collaboration notes, I really became confused because I have still had difficulties to figure out what are the exact differences between collaboration and cooperation. They have their own dictionary meanings.

collaboration: when you work together with another person or group to achieve something, especially in science or art

cooperation: when you work with someone to achieve something that you both want.

For both there is group study but what is the difference. I am not sure but what I understood is that for collaboration every group members focus on each part of any project. On the other hand, for cooperation each group members focuses on a specific part of the project and then share his/her part with the other group members. Is this understanding correct? If so, for our project, we are sharing responsibilities. Therefore, I think we can we are working cooperatively. I hope my understanding is true. And I am wondering how we can work collaboratively.

Job Aid Prototype

Hi,

I would like to share my job aid prototype.  I really need your comment on the prototype. Stages have not been determined but I almost decided how to organize my job aid. Colors are also clear to me. I would like to use grey for the background, red and black for the texts. Audience of the job aid is desktop computer users. My plan is to explain to desktop computers' users how to format and partition a hard drive. I hope my job is going to be effective.

Changing Project and Job Aid Topics

Hi,

Our team was working on the first grade teacher's uses of play-based method to facilitate students' transaction from kindergarten to first grade. However, we did not access enough teachers to interview. Therefore, with the recommendation of Dr. Glazewski, we have decided to focus on public speaking.

Job Aid Topic

Before the class on Monday, I has three topic on my job aids. First of them was "how to withdraw from an bank ATM?" Dr. Glazewski told me that this topic is not appropriate because everyone know how to withdraw. The second one was "how to effectively use body language during public speaking?" This topic is so broad. There are many kinds of body language to use within public speaking so I am not going to use this topic, either. The last one was "how to format a harddrive?" Dr. Glazewski more like this topic and she recommended me to enhance the topic with some additional points. Regarding her recommendation, I will also add "how to create partitions" to my topic. I hope I will achieve a good job with my job aids.

Introduction to Web Design

Hi,

This week I wanted to start learning web design from lynda.com. Actually, when I was an undergraduate student, I was good at web design. I voluntarily created a professional website with two of my friends. These days, this website, http://www.aked.org.tr, is going to be changed, but we designed the first form of that website. While we were creating the website, we used PHP. I can say that I am still good at web design but I wanted to start from a basic form of web design program, HTML. I believe that it will be very helpful for me to make a framework any of my websites in the future. HTML videos helped me to explore a new software which I can edit, test , and compile my website. This software is "KOMODO EDIT 7." It is free and very useful. Actually, Dreamweaver is also helpful for this goal but Komodo edit can be another good choice.

Project Proposal

Hi,

This week, our comedy group team has concentrated on preparing project proposal based on Dr. Glazewzski's recommendation from the meeting we had with her on Monday. After Monday, we had several meetings to discuss the proposal. We are first going to describe the planned intervention. We are going to define our purpose and our project objectives. Our purpose is to help first grade teachers to create and use play-based activities. Our context will include Web Based Learning Platform,  instructional videos, written instructions, and opportunities for teachers to report their experiences implementing the activities. We are going to create short videos (1-5 minutes) based on Winn's principles of message design. Website content will not include a lot of text and still images. 

The objective of such  is to increase active student engagement. We can measure student engagement by observing students' mental attention to a learning subject or by a physical activity.The physical activity makes easier to observe and measure the levels of engagement immediately. Students in Indiana public school have difficulties for transition from kindergarten to third grade. This transition can be especially difficult for students more used to learning through play-based activities. Therefore, we hope to help and encourage teachers for these reasons.

Importance of Motivation

Hi,

After last week, we decided to interview 3-5 first grade teachers. Therefore, I started looking for some first grade teachers around Bloomington. I have collected more than 20 first grade teachers email addresses. I am planning to email them before Monday because I want them to read their emails when they go to their school on Monday. Megan wrote a letter for us to request teachers for interviews. In our project we are going to ask some questions to first grade teachers. These question will be related to description of their teaching strategies, description of difficulties for students' transitions to first grade, students' adaptations, integration of play in teaching methods, types of play resources.

Actually, after class in last week, I completely believe that our groups' motivation is adequate for this project. The audio record we prepared in a short certain time to show Dr. Glazewski why snow can be nice made me really happy. My all group members spent much more effort for that. I am proud of them. So, I can say that my team's motivation is good. On the other hand, we also need to motivate teachers first to accept our request for interview. I hope that our letter will make them excited to participate in our project. For this we need to convince them to believe that there is a relationship between their curriculum and our project. also, they need to trust us. Confidence is the most important elements of an interview. If they trust us, they will help us with the all stage of our project. We are planning to satisfy our target audience because we believe that if the will satisfy with our project, we will satisfy, too.

Lynda.com

Hi,

I have been visiting lynda.com for years. When I was an undergraduate student in Turkey, some of my friends and I was using some licensed lynda videos to improve our skills of uses some software, such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, and Autocad. After I came here, I took some courses on Adobe Photoshop form IT Training Service in Herman Wells Library. Someone taught us how to effectively use Photoshop. They used the infromation from lynda.com. Therefore, I really used to visit lynda.com.

These days, I started visiting lynda.com to watch videos about statistics. I tranferred Y502 course from my master. This course is about foundational statistics. I want to study the terms that I have learned before. I watched some videos from lynda.com. I think it will be very useful and helpful for me to repeat everything. The best thing that I have realized about lynda.com videos is that they provide us some documents to follow videos and doing practice while watching the videos.

Narrative Description of Content:

This infographic is designed to introduce soccer game players’ roles according to their positions.

1.What is soccer?

In this part, I am going to provide information about the history and a brief explanation of soccer game (historyofsoccer.info and wikipedia)

a.Soccer game started in England.

b.At first, the main goal was to carry the ball to a certain target point.

c.Two different teams, involving 11 players, played against each other.

d.Generally, each game takes 90 minutes and additional time.

2. What are the positions? (wikipedia)

Goalkeeper (GK), defender (DF), center-back (CB), sweeper/libero (SW), right-back (RB), left-back (LB), right-wingbacks (RWB), left-wingbacks (LWB), midfielder (MF, AM, CM, RM, or LM), forward (RF, LF, or CF), second striker (SS), winger (RW or LW).

3. Positional systems

In this part, I will explain some different combination of positions in terms of the team’s playing  mentality.

Narrative Description of Design and / or Sketches of the Functional Areas:

The message will be design on a depiction of soccer field. Soccer filed color will be green. The primary color on the green field will be white to help readers to read easily. Each position for players will be represented by initials and maybe picture of player examples. 

Representation

During the last Fall semester in R521 course, Scott, Megan, Kei, and I developed an instructional module for elementary school teachers to integrate comedy into their classes to improve students' engagement . After analysis of the effect of comedy on students' learning, we have understood that humor can reduce students' stress, provide  an equal teaching and learning environment, and increase students' motivation toward learning.

For this semester, we have decided to focus on the same subject. Therefore, our target audience is going to be 1-4 grades elementary school teachers. A new member, Peter, has joined our group. Our purpose will be helping the teachers to understand how to integrate humor into their classrooms to make a better student engagement. We will teach them how an why they need to use humorous elements. During this process, we have to be very careful because our audience will going to apply our ideas on some special groups. 1-4 grades students are very sensitive group. Therefore, our project requires a kind of professionalism.

I hope we will have great time with our project during the semester.

Infographic Topics

Hi Everyone,

My infographic topics are as follows:

1. From master's degree to PhD degree graduate education process.

I believe this infographic will be very helpful to undergraduate students, especially for international students, before they apply to a program.

2. Who plays what in soccer game...

Soccer game is not as popular as NBA or football in the USA. I would like to create an infographic which explains the role of players with their positions in a soccer game.

3. IU Students' preferences of foods

I am worrying what kind of foods IU students like in terms of different countries' foods. I think is the funniest topic I chose.

Infographics Principles

Before I attended the class on Monday, I didn't know how an infographic can be important. I was thinking that infographics were only kind of design products in terms of people's perspectives. However, during the class and after the class, I figured out that infographics are very important design products because they have  principles and rules. Different infographics which were brought into class by my classmates and Dr. Glazewski, and Dr. Appelman's presentation helped me to understand the importance of designing an infographic. Also, after this week's class, I think infographics principles should be as follows:

• The information embedded into infographics should be relevant to purpose of designer for the infographics. 
• The information embedded into infographics should be easily readable. 
• In terms of visualization, colors should be consistent with each other.   

People Love Tablets (Infographics Example)

       

This is my second post on my blog page. I really like technology, so this infographic looks great to me for some reasons. First of all, each picture embedded into the infographic represents what the picture is about, especially the big picture of the tablet. Then, there is not much words to hinder visualization of the infographic. I think there is a coherence among colors. Briefly, this infographic example is relevant to what the designer wants to convey.

Introduction

Hi All,

My name is Remzi Kizilboga. I am a first year PhD student in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University Bloomington. This is my second year in Bloomington. In my first year, I attended Intensive English Program to improve my English skills. Bloomington is a great city for me. It is safer and cheaper. It has also many opportunities for students to socialize. Before I came here, I completed my master in Turkey. I have been also teaching in a public elementary school for two years. Actually, I love teaching so I really miss my teaching experience years.

My parents live in Turkey with my two sisters. I love them and look forward to seeing them again. After completing my PhD, I will go back to Turkey. My government wants me to work in a public university as a professor. Therefore, I want to go back and share my experiences in IUB with Turkish students. I believe that the courses related to instructional design will help me to better understand "What is instructional design?", How can I design an effective instruction?", and "How can I appropriately apply designed instructions?"
